Day Two: January 21 2009

Well it was just a matter of time until President Obama flexed his muscles. That day friends, came today.

When I first heard about the plan to close the Guantanamo Bay prison I was slightly taken back. I understand that the Bush administration made no friends with how they handled the "illegal combatants" at the facility. The solution however, should not come down to moving these combatants to the United States. For those of you not well versed on this topic Pres. Obama plans to have the government evaluate the combatants and see which cases can be thrown out and which cases should be taken to trial. While this is a good idea in practice, this particular blogger finds this to be nothing more then bureaucratic lip service.

Friends, moving these combatants to the United States is a bad idea. These people deserve their due process, that part is true, but in our country...I don't think so. The last thing we need is a jail break, or something worse.

I hate painting scenes like that...using the Chicken Little ("the sky is falling!!") argument, but it's a way to get my point across.

I am not in favor of closing that base. It's like Jack Nicholson said as Col. Nathan Jessep..."you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall!"

However I do have to give some props to Obama (which may turn into a SOMETIMES thing soon enough) I do like him trying to untangle the massive black curtain that hangs in front of our government with his New Freedom of Information Act rules. Again, I just hope it isn't lip service...I hope he plans on seeing this one through.

After all wouldn't we all like to know who shot JFK?

Hope and Change, hope and change.

  1. While I respect President Obama's attempt to make things right with Guantanamo, I feel, much like you, he's not going about it the best way. The government has detained people they feel are high-risk threats to our security in this place. Although not in optimal location and condition, I'm fine with these people staying right where they are. Sure put them through their trials, but I'm pretty sure there have been quite a few detainees in there now that have gone through their rightful trials. They've been through the process... and they're still there. Why? Because no country is willing to take them back. You're talking about people we've seen as threats, for whatever reason have cleared them and allowed them to be released and yet have no place to send them, TO BE FREE. Bringing individuals in the actual country that we feel are even worse than the guys we can't even get rid of, is an issue with me.
